Teacher Training
In Mali, only half of middle school teachers meet the minimum qualifications to teach. Though deeply committed to their students, teachers rarely get the support they need to improve.
Mali Rising provides ongoing professional development for teachers in our partner schools, built around the specific needs of each school.
Since 2015, Mali Rising has trained over 300 teachers, with participants consistently improving by about 30% in the areas the program targets.
Girls
Literacy
In Mali, fewer than half of young women can read and write. Girls who fall behind in reading are more likely to leave school early, losing more than five years of life expectancy on average.
Mali Rising teaches girls in our partner villages to read, through small after-school classes led by local teachers.
Since 2016, more than 1,700 girls have taken part in the program and, by the end, almost all of them leave the program reading at a strong or competent level.
French Language Support
In Mali, middle school is taught in French, but most students in rural villages grow up speaking Bambara or another local language at home. Students who can't keep up in French fall behind in every subject.
Mali Rising provides small group French classes to strengthen oral and written comprehension for 7th graders in our partner schools.
Since 2022, the French Language Intervention has reached more than 1,000 students, with participating students improving their French scores by an average of 20%.
